SWEDISH & RUSSIAN ARMY FLEETS
Naval Wars in the Baltic
This range covers predominantly the wars between Sweden and Russia
during the period 1778-1809. They were principally fighting over Finland, the coast of
which has many islands and shallow inlets where conventional sailing vessels could not go.
Therefore, fleets of shallow draught vessels and gunboats were designed to operate in
these waters and to support the armies ashore. Many fierce actions were fought between the
army fleets of Russia and Sweden. For more background information and
list of the vessel types/numbers in service between 1778-1814, click on the following
link. BACKGROUND
Each kit is presented complete with
hull, masts and sails as appropriate, together with separate oar banks. One of the
features of these vessels is that they could be sailed or rowed. The wargamer can have the
model fully rigged, then at a stage in the game where he/she changes to oars, can simply
fit the oar banks, at which time the sails will be assumed furled for game purposes.
Hull, masts and oar banks are cast in white metal.
Sails, where set, are 4 thou photo etched brass; furled sails are in white metal. Please
note: references with a * are not available at this time.
SEA BASES are available. See list
at bottom of this page. |

OTHER SWEDISH & RUSSIAN VESSELS
Both sides often captured or copied each other's vessels. The following references
list the vessels which are interchangeable.
SWEDEN: The Swedish fleet would have included
3-masted Galleys, similar in design to Russian,
so use Ref: SR15.
RUSSIAN: The Russian fleet also had many Gun Sloops
and Gun Yawls which were actual copies of the Swedish Kannonslup and Kannonjolle, so use
Ref: SR6 and SR7.
FLEET OF BOTH NATIONALITIES would also have included
other vessels of 24 guns and less. To represent these, use the following from our Napoleonic
Naval range.
Ref: DU13 or DU14 (24 gun Brig Corvette) (Hull and
sail set sold separately.)
Ref: DU15 or DU16 (24 gun Ship Corvette) (Hull and sail set sold separately.)
Medium Merchant (Hull and sail set sold separately.
Unrated Vessels (complete sets): Choose from Sloop, Small Merchant, Brig, 10 gun
Schooner, Cutters, Gunboats and Floating Battery.
